Agreement aims to balance economics and environment

B.C. First Nations have agreed to work together to develop B.C.'s rich natural resources while protecting them for the future.

Representatives of B.C. First Nations natural resource councils signed a co-operation protocol agreement covering areas of forestry, fisheries and energy at the B.C. Assembly of First Nations 5th Regional Chiefs Special Assembly Conference at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre this week.

Housing "catch up" remains key barrier to In-SHUCK-ch treaty

The In-SHUCK-ch Nation has completed treaty talks on “all substantive issues” with the provincial government.

But the lack of a deal with the federal government to address housing “catch up” is still standing in the way of a treaty, according to a letter from In-SHUCK-ch chiefs to federal minister of Indian affairs Chuck Strahl.

VANCOUVER -- Aboriginal leaders from around British Columbia gathered yesterday in Vancouver's Playhouse Theatre to announce details of the 2010 Aboriginal Pavilion of the Olympic Games. The executive director of the Four Host First Nations (FHFN), Tewanee Joseph, described the 8,000-square-foot pavilion, to be erected on the plaza of the downtown Queen Elizabeth Theatre, as "the world's biggest potlatch."
